Michener was born in New York City in 1907. He graduated summa cum laude from Swarthmore College and did research work at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Virginia, Ohio State University, Harvard, The University of St. Andrews (Scotland), and the University of Siena (Italy). He taught at the George School (PA), Colorado State College, and Harvard. Mr. Michener skyrocketed to fame with his first book, TALES OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC, which became the basis of the musical "South Pacific." Today he is internationally known as the author of such world-famous bestsellers as HAWAII, THE SOURCE, IBERIA, AND CENTENNIAL.Quoted in its entirety from "About The Author" in Mr. Michener's novel, Centennial. (1978)October 17, 1997Mr. Michener was born on February 3, 1907 in New York City. After his birth he was taken as an orphan to the Bucks County Poorhouse in Doylestown, PA, where he was adopted by the Quaker couple Edwin and Mabel Michener, who named him. Michener later recalled that having spent his childhood in poverty "accounts for my social attitude - I'm a fiery liberal." His writing career spanned fifty years, and he claimed to have lived in (121) different countries and states gathering background for his many novels. The underlying themes of his works expressed his personal ideals of religious and racial tolerance, hard work, and self-reliance.
